Raaslila in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh Raaslila in Mathura is considered to be one of the most colorful and enchanting festivals in Mathura. Raaslila is the musical drama that enacts various stages of the adorable events related to the childhood of Lord Krishna. It is celebrated on Janmashthami, the birthday of Lord Krishna and performed by Brahmin boys within the age group of 13-14 years.

 

It is said that Lord Krishna used to play pranks with the Gopis on the banks of the Yamuna river and when Sri Krishna got separated from the gopis, the village girls, unable to bear the separation, used to recollect the pranks of the Lord and would enact them. Thus , in due course of time, the pranks of Srikrishna in the dramatic form came to be known as ‘Raaslila’.

 

Today, Raaslila is ascribed to Narayan Bhatt and Haridas.
